The Basement Creative Lab is a space for library patrons to learn and practice audio and video production skills. The Basement encompasses two basic units:
It is understood that Provo City Library is not responsible for the ideas, opinions, or content of projects made utilizing Provo City Library spaces or equipment.
Use of the Studio is free for Provo City cardholders. The Studio is for users ages 13 and over (unless enrolled in a library program or accompanied by an adult). All users will submit a signed User Agreement to be kept on file. For minors (under 18), a signed copy of our User Agreement with a parent/guardian signature is required.
To schedule recording time in the Studio, all users must complete either Introduction to Studio Production or Basic Audio Production (if using sound equipment only). Upon completion of this class, users will be issued “Basement Creative Lab” privileges on their library card. These privileges are linked to the user’s library account.
Use of the Studio and equipment operate on the Library’s online reservation system. Requests for studio time must be submitted online seven days in advance.
Users who arrive more than 15 minutes after their scheduled start time may have their reservation canceled; users who arrive late must still leave the Studio at their scheduled ending time.
Use of the Studio is limited to a total of eight hours per month per user or user group (excluding classes and training). Individual members of a group may not stack reservations to gain extra time when the group is primarily the same as the original reserving group. All reservations are subject to library approval.
Library staff are on-site to support the use of the Creative Lab. Their help is limited to providing assistance and training opportunities and overseeing the Studio while it is in use. Library staff will not consult in a creative capacity or operate equipment for Studio users during their sessions.
Food and drink are not allowed in the Studio, with the exception of a covered water bottles.
Users must bring their own external storage devices for their recordings and should budget time in the reservation window for the transfer of files. The library will not save any video footage or audio files.
Users are responsible for respecting copyright laws and licensing agreements.
Provo City Library reserves the right to stop the creation of items that violate Library policy or legal standards, including that that involve pornography or illegal material.
All users are responsible for paying for loss or damage (whether caused by inappropriate use or negligence) to the Studio or its equipment. If a user sees that any piece of equipment is unsafe or in a state of disrepair, the user must immediately discontinue the use of that equipment and notify Library staff.
The Multimedia Editing Stations may be reserved by using the Library’s online reservation system. Users may reserve an editing station for up to four hours per day. Time may be extended is there are no other reservations. Reservations can be made up to two weeks in advance.
Users that arrive more than 15 minutes after their reservation time may have their reservation cancelled. Stations that are not reserved are available to all users on a first come, first served basis.
Editing stations are reserved for video, audio, photography, and graphic design applications. The Library has other computers available for word processing, internet access, and general computer use.
Editing stations are for users ages 13 and over. Users are expected to have a working knowledge of the editing software. Library staff can direct users to relevant online tutorials but cannot provide detailed assistance.
Users are responsible for providing their own external storage devices. Work may not be saved to the editing stations and anything that is not transferred to an external device will be deleted at the end of the session. The Library is not responsible for any data that may be lost while a user is using an editing station.
For any editing that involves sound, users must provide their own headphones. Earbuds may be purchased at the Reference Desk, if necessary.
The use of Multimedia Editing Stations must comply with our Internet and Online Access Policy.
